Women's empowerment, Kandy, Sri Lanka

Sudarshanti Manike sews bags for Self Employment Education & Welfare Association (SEWA), as her 7-year-old son peers out the window of their home near Kandy, Sri Lanka.

Manike, a former garment factory worker, is happy because she can earn money for her children's education while being free to set her own hours and work at her own pace. Working for herself allows her the freedom to be with her children while she is sewing, tend her garden periodically and move about freely as she desires. She has been sewing bags for SEWA for three months, and as per the program dictates, she is paid per completed bag.

From my personal project, "Woman" discovering women's empowerment in Sri Lanka created in and around Kandy, Sri Lanka.
