Rural Living

38 images Created 23 Jan 2022

Prior to arriving in rural California, I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area and Anchorage, Alaska. For many years, I divided my time between California and the Reno, Nevada - Lake Tahoe regions. Though our community is approximately 145 miles from San Francisco, the over-arching views are worlds away in lifestyle choices, politics and perceptions. We're a mix of generational ranching families, retired Bay Area professionals, timber fallers, U.S. Forest Service employees, firefighters, etc. Our love of elbow room, independence and wild places tend to unite us.

This is an evergreen collection of images from various Rural California communities, though most of the images were taken in Tuolumne and Mariposa counties.

 • Contestants throw punches in the no-holds-barred "Bull of the Woods" competiton during the 66th Annual Tuolumne Lumber Jubilee in Tuolumne City, California, on June 28, 2015.

Two competitors stand toe-to-toe, and duke it out until one of them is knocked off the log. Contestants draw opponent's names randomly from a hat and box one another atop a fallen log. The winner from each round advances, again drawing a random competitor's name, until the last person standing is crowned champion.

The Lumber Jubilee celebrates the logging industry in Tuolumne County, and it is the oldest single community celebration in the county. The event attempts to preserve and nourish the traditions and customs which contribute to the deep roots of this community.
